Take 10 Case Study
Providing a late-night “safe zone” for vulnerable youth
case study: take 10
background
Take 10 is a charitable organisation run by the Vulnerable Support Charitable Trust.
The Take 10 team provide a late-night “safe zone” for vulnerable youth in Wellington’s entertainment district.
For those who may need a break from drinking, need help, or just want a break, Take 10 provide a safe place to “take 10”. They can hang out, have some water, charge their phone to stay in touch with friends and family, get medical help, refuge, and advice from our fully trained team leaders and volunteers.
Originally based outside St James Theatre on Courtenay Place it soon became apparent that a more extensive set up would be required.
challenge
Take 10 felt that a mobile solution would work best to cover all their needs at Courtenay place and allow them to attend other events. The brief to Brand Productions was to find a mobile solution that covered a range of requirements including continuing to provide a safe space for the public to come to and take a break. It had to provide cover and space for the public to sit & play games even in inclement weather.
The vehicle had to be able to hold a substantial amount of fresh water and allow the public multiple charging points for their phones. It needed to have a private area in which to take people who may require more medical attention and finally it needed a separate space where the Take Ten staff and volunteers themselves could take ten including containing a private staff toilet.
solution
Brand Productions started the process by creating a detailed scoping document scouring not just NZ but internationally for a range of suitable vehicles. After working through the pros & cons of each it was decided to import a specialist event vehicle from the UK. With a large pop out extension and built in generator this vehicle would provide the best platform on which to build the rest of Take Ten’s requirements around.
Brand Productions sourced the vehicle from the UK, negotiated with the former UK owners and arranged shipping to NZ. Whilst the vehicle was on the water designs we’re finalised for the conversion of the vehicle so as not to waste anytime once it arrived. On arrival the previous fit out was removed and work commenced on the inside to create the private medical bay at one end and the staff area with toilet at the other. Water tanks were fitted, heating & aircon installed, and additional wiring added. Meanwhile Brand Productions also designed and produced a temporary structure with covers to allow the outdoor area to be enclosed during poor weather.
The final task was to ensure that the vehicle complied with all NZTA regulations and re register the vehicle in NZ. The Take Ten Vehicle can now be found every Saturday night assisting the public in Wellington and also at other events around the region.
